Request for Investigation Filed

Jan 16, 2024

After months of diligent research, consultation, and unwavering commitment, the Concerned Citizens of King Township (CCKT) and Save the Oak Ridges Moraine (STORM) Coalition have launched a pivotal environmental action. This initiative is a culmination of extensive efforts to challenge the approval of the St. Rita at Mary Lake facility by King Township, marking a significant milestone in the battle to safeguard the Oak Ridges Moraine (Greenbelt). The crux of this struggle lies in the proposed construction of a 160-bed long-term care facility, precariously situated between Mary Lake and a provincially significant wetland. Critics highlight that this development not only violates essential environmental protections but also jeopardizes the hydrogeological stability and biodiversity of the region, threatening numerous fish species among others.

This initiative is not a sudden uprising but the fruit of persistent advocacy and meticulous strategizing to protect our environment. The collaboration between CCKT and STORM exemplifies the power of community engagement and dedicated stewardship. To grasp the depth of this challenge and the fervor behind our collective effort, we invite you to read the attached Press Release and Request for an Investigation (13 MB). Join us in this crucial journey to defend our natural heritage and to ensure that the call for ecological preservation resonates far and wide.

As it has taken time and money to investigate this breach of legislation and regulation, anyone interested in helping is asked to please donate to the Save Mary Lake account with the Small Change Fund.
