Act Now: Safeguard the Oak Ridges Moraine – Oppose the LTC Facility at Mary Lake

Jun 7, 2023

We reach out to you with an immediate call to action to preserve a vital ecological zone — the stunning Mary Lake on the Oak Ridges Moraine in King Township. We urge you to lend your support by signing our petition and communicating your concerns to the Ontario government.

The Ontario Ministry of Long-Term Care is currently considering a proposal to grant a Long-Term Care license to St. Rita at Mary Lake, a substantial 160-bed Long-Term Care (LTC) facility planned to be constructed outside the urban ‘Settlement’ boundary of King City on the north side of the 15th Sideroad. This proposed development is situated in a remote, ecologically delicate area on the Oak Ridges Moraine, nestled between Mary Lake, a kettle lake, and a significant portion of a large Provincially Significant Wetland. The site currently holds a ‘Countryside Area’ designation, intended to promote agricultural and other rural uses, in line with the Land Use Designations outlined in the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Act and Plan.

Land development poses the most significant threat to the Oak Ridges Moraine’s functionality. The Moraine is an ecologically valuable geological formation that serves as the water source for numerous headwater streams flowing south into rivers that drain into Lake Ontario and north into rivers that drain into Lake Scugog and Lake Simcoe. The Moraine’s woodlands, wetlands, bogs, watercourses, and kettle lakes foster healthy ecosystems for a diverse range of plant and animal species, including those classified as Species at Risk in Canada and Ontario. The Moraine’s conservation is crucial for maintaining aquifers in a safe, drinkable state while also safeguarding the natural ecosystems within and surrounding the Moraine. We must persist in our efforts to protect this unique ecological gem.

While we acknowledge the necessity for LTC facilities, we firmly believe that Mary Lake is not a suitable site for such a large-scale institutional development. The Ministry of Long-Term Care of Ontario is presently reviewing this proposal (Project #24-007), and we have until this Friday, June 9th, to express our objections.

Here’s how you can contribute:
